bethany m. allen is a writer, mother, and student living in Roxbury, MA. Inspired by queer Black feminism, particularly the Combahee River Collective’s edict that “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression” and CB Beal’s preemptive radical inclusion framework (which presupposes that “everyone is already, and always, in the room”), her work explores the conditions needed to cultivate liberated educational spaces (inside and outside of traditional school settings) where all young people, but especially queer and trans youth of color, can bring their authentic selves without threat or fear of violence. After raising three queer Black children of her own, she returned to Harvard in 2024 to complete the undergraduate degree she started in 1989 and is currently pursuing an EdM in the Human Development & Education program.
