Neil Sharma

Neil specializes in mixed-methods program evaluation research while studying how to implement mechanisms that expand higher education access across age and socioeconomic circumstances. A former college dropout, he spent a decade working in food services before returning to higher education in 2021, thanks to the affordability of the community college pathway. Since then, Neil has worked to expand similar opportunities for others, regardless of background. Focusing on first-generation, rural, and transfer student success, Neil has helped create robust and accessible support networks. He co-founded the Transfer Lounge, a one-stop hub designed to build social and professional connections for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) students. He also founded the Education Symmetry Project, a 50-member nonprofit working to improve college access through research, programming, and peer mentorship. Neil coaches adult learners at his community college alma mater and supports transfer students transitioning to UNC. He holds bachelor’s degrees in Public Policy and Political Science, and a master’s degree in Public Policy from UNC.
